Summary

Updates the workshops for two changes in the GitHub Copilot app and syncs the three first steps workshops with upstream. The app's My work view is now separate Pull requests and Issues views, so every lesson that sent learners to My work is updated: the first steps app tour and the real-world app workshop, including its five translations. The first steps workshops also pick up the corrected /remote and plan-access guidance and the expanded prerequisites.

Change What changed here
jamesmontemagno/first-steps-with-github-copilot#11: split My work (first steps) App lessons 0, 6, 7, and 11 say Pull requests and Issues, with the new Assigned to me / Created by me / Mentioning me / Done tabs. Lesson 0 also lists Projects.
Split My work (real-world app) Lesson 1 lists Pull requests and Issues in the sidebar overview and sends learners to Issues for the seeded backlog. Lesson 3 and the Foundry module's first lesson open their issue from Issues. Same edits in es-es, ja-jp, ko-kr, pt-br, and zh-cn.
jamesmontemagno/first-steps-with-github-copilot#10: /remote runs locally App lesson 10 and CLI lesson 7 say the session keeps running on your machine, which must stay on, and that the mobile app is an option. The CLI lesson no longer suggests closing your laptop. App lesson 12 and both landing tables match.
jamesmontemagno/first-steps-with-github-copilot#10: plan access CLI lesson 9 and VS Code lesson 9 note that /delegate and cloud sessions need an eligible paid Copilot plan.
jamesmontemagno/first-steps-with-github-copilot@db820cd: prerequisites Lesson 0 of all three first steps workshops links to GitHub signup, names Copilot Free or a paid plan, and says to use organization-provided access where you have it.

Illustrations: first-steps-app-my-work.svg is redrawn and renamed to first-steps-app-issues.svg, and first-steps-app-automations.svg gets the new sidebar. Both were generated by running upstream labs/art.js and wrapping the output in the existing theme-aware style block, so the diff against the previous files is limited to the drawing. The real-world app screenshots did not need changes: the three I checked (app-new-session-from-issue.png, app-2-review-panel.png, app-select-changes.png) are crops that do not show the sidebar.

Type of change

  • Workshop content (lesson Markdown, images)
  • Site shell (website/ Astro + Starlight wrapper)
  • Copilot configuration (.github/copilot-instructions.md, instructions, agents, skills)
  • Repo housekeeping (CI, dependabot, README, license)
  • Other:

Verification

  • Type checks and a clean site build pass.
  • Affected pages and translations match their source and intended routes.
  • Offline internal link checks pass.
  • Changed external links have been checked separately.

Ran & ./.github/skills/build-and-verify-docs/scripts/verify.ps1 on Windows against the final content (exit code 0):

Step Command Result
Type checks npm run check:all Passed: 0 errors, 0 warnings, 4 hints (existing z deprecation hints in src/content.config.ts)
Clean build npm run build Passed: 590 pages built
Offline links lychee --offline --no-progress Passed: 0 errors (67,746 OK, 8,353 excluded)

Inspected the built HTML:

  • First steps: the changed routes under /first-steps/copilot-app/, /first-steps/copilot-cli/, and /first-steps/vscode/ carry the new text. Lesson 6 points at the renamed first-steps-app-issues asset, and no first-steps-app-my-work asset is emitted. First steps has no translated pages.
  • Real-world app: the three changed lessons were checked in English and all five locales (18 pages). Each has the Issues and Pull requests labels in the expected places and the right page language.
  • Whole site: no built page contains "My work".

External links: the one new link, https://github.com/signup, returned 403 to scripted requests, so @jamesmontemagno confirmed it in a browser.

Not run: the browser validation pass in validate-site-playwright. I rasterized the two SVGs in headless Edge to check the drawing, in the light theme only.

Notes for reviewers

  • Two app behaviors were confirmed by @jamesmontemagno, not by me. The seeded backlog issues are created by github-actions[bot] and are unassigned, and they still appear in the default Issues view. The Issues and Pull requests lists only show repositories added to the app, so the real-world lesson 1 note is kept and renamed.
  • The translations need a native-speaker look. The five locales reuse each file's existing terms and keep the UI labels in English, as the files already did. The edits are small (one split bullet and five label changes per locale), and nobody fluent has reviewed them.
  • docs.github.com still describes My work. The "Managing issues and pull requests" article has the old view and its All / Active / Review requests / Done sections, so the workshop is now ahead of the docs.
  • docs: add Polish (pl-pl) localization for app and CLI #168 will need the same rename. The open Polish localization adds the same three real-world app lessons with My work.
  • One wording difference remains between the two app workshops. First steps lessons 0 and 6 keep upstream's "every repository" for Pull requests and Issues. The real-world note says the lists only cover repositories added to the app.
  • The prerequisites commit upstream is titled "Save uncommitted changes". It landed on upstream main on October 5 while this PR was in progress. If that wording is not final, commit 973e30a here can be dropped on its own.
  • Plan wording now differs from the real-world workshops. First steps says Copilot Free works for all three tools, and that /delegate and cloud sessions need "an eligible paid Copilot plan". The real-world app lesson 1 says the app needs Copilot Student or a paid plan, and the real-world cloud landing page says cloud agent is on every plan except Copilot Free, which includes Copilot Student. I kept upstream's wording and did not check either claim against the product.
  • Other sidebar entries in real-world lesson 1 were left alone. It still lists Chats and Sessions as sidebar areas, while the upstream drawing shows More and Projects. I did not change what I could not confirm.
  • First steps app lesson 9's Markdown is unchanged. Only its illustration changed, so its lastUpdated date was left alone.
  • The new callouts render as plain <div> elements in the built HTML, the same as the unchanged Plan mode tip in app lesson 7. That behavior predates this PR.

Sync the Copilot app first steps workshop with upstream jamesmontemagno/first-steps-with-github-copilot#11. The app replaced My work with separate Pull requests and Issues views, so update the workspace overview, the issue and plan lessons, and the Canvas fallback note. Redraw the Issues illustration and refresh the Automations sidebar from upstream art.js.

Sync the Copilot app first steps workshop with upstream jamesmontemagno/first-steps-with-github-copilot#10. /remote makes a local session available on the web and in the GitHub Copilot mobile app; it does not move execution to the cloud, and the machine must stay on.

Port the CLI and VS Code parts of upstream jamesmontemagno/first-steps-with-github-copilot#10. The CLI lesson now says /remote keeps the session running locally and the machine must stay on, and no longer suggests closing the laptop. The CLI delegate and VS Code cloud session lessons note that they need an eligible paid Copilot plan.

… workshop

The app's My work view is now separate Pull requests and Issues views. Update the workspace overview, the seeded backlog steps, and the issue-linked session steps in lessons 1, 3, and the Foundry module, in English and the five translations.

The hint was not in upstream and assumed the default Issues view only lists assigned issues. Unassigned issues appear there, so the hint is not needed.
