When compiling with emscripten 4.0.9 (but not emscripten 3.x) there is a compilation error in the terminal pager, requiring a patch there (emscripten-forge/recipes#4263). Here I am upstreaming the change, which is simpler code anyway, so that in the future I can remove the patch in emscripten-forge.
Also removing an unused variable that the compiler warned me about.
