Bug 1 — InsertNetmask: malloc Without Copying Previous Array

Function: InsertNetmask() and the found != 0 branch of CPTAddElement()

Symptom

CIDR lookups silently fail once more than one CIDR prefix shares the same
radix-tree node. Concretely, a whitelist containing both 192.168.0.0/8 and
192.168.0.0/16 will match addresses in the /8 range correctly at first, but
after the /16 is inserted the /8 entry is lost — or vice versa depending on
insertion order. Whitelists with only non-overlapping, non-adjacent CIDRs
appear to work, which masks the bug.

Root Cause

Every time a node already holds a netmask and a second one is added,
InsertNetmask allocates a brand-new array, zeroes it, and writes only the
new value — without copying the previous array's contents:

realloc (or malloc + memcpy + free) is required. The same pattern
appears in CPTAddElement at the found != 0 branch. Beyond correctness,
the old pointer is never freed, so every reallocation leaks memory.

Bug 2 — CPTFindElementIPNetblock: Destructive In-Place Masking of ipdata

Function: CPTFindElementIPNetblock()

Symptom

CIDR lookups produce incorrect results when the query address must be checked
against netmasks at more than one tree depth. Results are non-deterministic
and depend on insertion order and the exact tree shape at query time.

Root Cause

The function applies the netmask bitmask directly to the caller's buffer:

ipdata[i] &= mask;   /* permanently overwrites the caller's memory */

It then recurses, passing the same already-modified ipdata to the parent
node's check. The parent compares against an address that has already been
partially zeroed by the child's mask, not the original query address.
A lookup must never mutate its input.

The msc_tree.cc radix-tree implementation (1163 lines, origin unknown) is
replaced with a sorted interval vector. Each CIDR is expanded to a
[lo, hi] integer interval at insert time; lookup is std::upper_bound +
backward scan, O(log n). Overlapping CIDRs are handled correctly by sorting
equal-lo intervals by hi descending (wider first).

1. Background

ModSecurity v2 and v3 share an identical msc_tree.cc — a custom radix tree
implementation with no known upstream maintainer and no test coverage.
Field reports describe intermittent or total IP whitelist match failures that
appear only after the whitelist grows beyond a certain size, and that affect
@ipMatchFromFile and @ipMatch equally.

This report documents a controlled reproduction of those failures using the
verbatim original source, explains the exact mechanism, and confirms the
failure category.

2. Reproduction Setup

2.1 Method

The relevant functions were extracted verbatim from msc_tree.cc into a
standalone C++ file (repro_bugs.cc) with no modification to any logic.
The file was compiled with AddressSanitizer and UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer
enabled and exercised with a set of controlled scenarios designed to isolate
each suspected bug independently.

5. Root Cause Analysis

5.1 Why Functional Tests Pass

The radix tree uses two independent mechanisms for CIDR matching:

Path A — CPTFindElement direct match:
CPTRetriveNode → exact node found → TreePrefixNetmask checks
prefix->prefix_data linked list. This list is correctly maintained by
CPTAppendToCPTDataList even when Bug 1 is active, because the linked list
and the netmasks[] array are separate data structures.

Path B — CPTFindElementIPNetblock fallback:
When the direct match fails (node not found or bit mismatch), the lookup
climbs the tree to parent nodes and uses node->netmasks[] to try each CIDR
prefix. This is where Bug 1 causes incorrect results — netmasks[] has been
overwritten with zeros.

With small, non-overlapping whitelists, the direct match (Path A) always
succeeds. Bug 1 only surfaces when Path B is taken, which requires the tree
to be complex enough that the initial node search fails and the fallback is
needed. This is the exact mechanism behind the reported threshold behaviour.

5.2 Bug 1 — InsertNetmask: malloc Without Copy

Location: InsertNetmask() and the found != 0 branch of CPTAddElement()

Every time a second CIDR maps to the same tree node, the existing
node->netmasks pointer is replaced with a freshly allocated, zero-filled
array. The previous array's contents are never copied, and the old pointer is
never freed.

Effect: When Path B is taken during lookup, CPTFindElementIPNetblock
iterates over netmasks[] and applies each prefix mask in turn. With
corrupted zeros in the array, the wrong mask is applied, producing an address
that cannot match any stored prefix, causing a silent miss.

Consequence of increasing IP count: As the whitelist grows, the tree
deepens and widens. The probability that a given lookup takes Path B
increases monotonically. This produces the observed behaviour: small lists
work reliably; larger lists exhibit intermittent misses that worsen with scale.

5.3 Bug 2 — CPTFindElementIPNetblock: Destructive In-Place Masking

Location: CPTFindElementIPNetblock()

The function applies the CIDR bitmask directly to the caller's address buffer:

CPTFindElement partially protects against this by copying the query address
into a local temp_data array before calling CPTFindElementIPNetblock. This
copy means individual top-level calls are isolated. However, when
CPTFindElementIPNetblock recurses to a parent node, it passes the
already-masked temp_data — which now contains a partially zeroed address
rather than the original query. Subsequent iterations and recursive calls
compare against this corrupted value.

Effect: For deep trees with multiple CIDR levels, the recursive parent
walk produces incorrect comparisons. An address that should match a
grandparent CIDR may fail because by the time the grandparent is checked,
the address bytes have been progressively zeroed by child-level masks.

5.4 Bug 3 — Memory Leak on Every Insertion

Location: CPTAddElement, InsertNetmask, CPTCreateHead, and all
CPTCreate* functions.

No heap object allocated by the tree is ever freed during normal operation.
IpTree::~IpTree called postOrderTraversal to walk and free the tree, but
with the new replacement this is a no-op, and with the original code the
traversal was incomplete. The ASAN report confirms 1.6 MB leaked from a
single test run with ~5000 insertions.

At production scale (10,000–100,000 whitelist entries, multiple worker
processes, frequent config reloads) this constitutes a material and
measurable memory leak.

Threshold is not a fixed IP count. It is the point at which the tree
topology forces Path B lookups. This depends on the distribution of addresses,
the presence of overlapping CIDRs, and the specific bit patterns of the
addresses being queried. In practice: lists with only flat hosts and no
overlapping CIDRs can grow to thousands of entries without triggering the
bug; any list mixing CIDRs with sub-ranges will trigger it at N=2 overlapping
prefixes.

10. Fix

The radix tree implementation is replaced with a sorted interval vector
(std::vector<[lo, hi]> per address family). This eliminates all three bugs:

• No malloc/realloc during insert: intervals are stored in a
  std::vector with standard memory management.
• No in-place mutation during lookup: all operations are read-only on the
  stored intervals.
• No memory leak: TreeRoot destructor releases all memory via RAII.
