I think you are a bit mistaken on this. Openevolve is written in Python, but it should be able to be used for other program language (in this case, your R program). I am actually experimenting using this to optimize C++ performance.

You would have to write your own Python evaluator function that returns a dictionary of metrics . The evaluator function eval(program_path) return a temporary file path, which you can open, read, then write back into a dedicated R file before running that R file via R interpreter (invoked from inside of the eval(program_path) function). The evaluation, e.g. {"combined_score" : 8, "some_other_metric": 4}, is return by your evaluator function, and Openevolve would take that as info to feed to the LLM.
